Yeast & Salt Movement Theatre was founded in 2013 by Artistic Director, Tsai Ching-Cheng, and is based in the Beitou District of Taipei City, Taiwan.
The concept of 'Yeast & Salt' was inspired by Tsai Ching-Cheng's time in the UK. Passionate about dance and theatre, she travelled there to study 'movement theatre' — a technique that combines physical expression and textual creation in theatrical performance. During her time in Britain, she often lived on dense, nutritious bread. The two most crucial ingredients in bread-making are yeast and salt. If the proportions are even slightly off, though, salt can kill the yeast. Ching-Cheng found this concept akin to dance and drama in movement theatre. Only by precisely calibrating and skilfully blending the creative process can one craft a truly great audiovisual creation.
Yeast & Salt Movement Theatre focuses on exploring human relationships, with the multifaceted nature of people serving as our preferred creative subject matter. We have produced numerous works and been invited to perform overseas. The company has participated in the Seoul and Daegu Arts Festivals in South Korea, the Fukuoka Itoshima Arts Festival in Japan, the Malaysia Arts Festival and the Prague International Theatre Festival.
